Radio Dynamometer

A radio dynamometer is another name for a wireless dynamometer. This is because most wireless technology uses radio frequency (R. F.) to transfer data between the system’s load cell and the receiver or display. Hence, a “radio dynamometer.”

This means that the readout or display is not attached to the dynamometer itself. Rather, it communicates with the system’s load cell via R.F.

But not all weighing systems use R. F. In fact, wired systems are still quite common. However, in many applications, a system with wireless radio technology will afford operators many advantages.

Advantages of radio dynamometers

Here are a few examples of advantages that radio dynamometers have over wired systems:

Safety

A wireless system also allows operators to monitor the loads from a safe distance. For example, our Ron 2501 model uses radio frequency to transmit measurements from the load cell body to the handheld display at a safe distance of up to 150 meters away (in prime outdoor conditions with a clear line of sight).

And, having no cable eliminates the risk of accidents caused by the cable becoming entangled.

Flexibility

Since the system isn’t restricted by wires or cables, operators have more maneuverability during weighing. This also makes installation easier since there’s no need to run cables.

Further, since the radio signal is broadcast around the worksite, several displays or receivers can be used with a single system giving multiple team members access to the measurements.

Mobility

Radio dynamometers can be moved without the hassle of unplugging and replugging in the device, making them more effective in changing work environments or transporting them onsite.

Crane scales vs. dynamometers

Just in case you’re not clear on the difference when it comes to crane scales vs. dynamometers, crane scales can also use radio technology and are similar to radio dynamometers—but there are a few differences to note.

The main difference between the two is that the crane scales have an upper shackle and a lower hook, while dynamometers have both upper and lower shackles.

It may not sound like much of a difference, but in some applications it’s essential. For example, if your application calls for applying horizontal tension, then a dynamometer will likely be a better choice.

Another difference is the maximum lifting capacity. While dynamometers can have capacities as high as 300 tons, most crane scale lines have a maximum capacity of no more than 30 tons.

Low-capacity radio dynamometer

Since dynamometers come in such a wide range of sizes and capacities, it’s important to use the right size system for each job, which will help prevent dangerous overloads.

Low-capacity models are those used for smaller jobs: from a half-ton up to 55 tons. These are models that can be easily transported and fit in a carrying case.

For example, Eilon Engineering’s 10-ton dynamometers weigh only about 3 pounds or about 1.5 kilograms. So if you need a 10-ton dynamometer that’s portable and easy to transport, our systems will be a big advantage.

Some applications for 10-ton dynamometers include:

  • Weighing machinery components
  • Proof Load testing
  • Shipment weighing
  • Controlled tensioning of undersea anchors
  • Weighing fishing nets

High-capacity radio dynamometers

High-capacity dynamometers are those used for applications involving very large and heavy objects. Our larger capacity systems range from an 85-ton capacity to 300 tons.

Yet, relative to their capacity, these dynamometers are still compact and lightweight with minimum headroom loss.

For example, our 150-ton dynamometers weigh only 57 kilograms or 125 pounds and are only 575mm or less than 23” in length.

Some industries where 150-ton dynamometers might be used include:

  • Shipbuilding
  • Oil and gas
  • Aerospace
  • Heavy machinery manufacturing
  • Automotive
  • Steel manufacturing

Radio aerospace dynamometers

Aerospace is a 300 billion-dollar global industry and one where safety and quality are of the utmost importance. As such, a quality radio dynamometer is an essential component of many aerospace lifting and weighing applications.

For example, Ball Aerospace used Eilon Engineering dynamometers during the assembly of its JPSS-1 Weather Satellite

Likewise, Boeing continues to use an Eilon radio dynamometer on its CST-100 Starliner project, a spacecraft designed to transport crew to the International Space Station.

Finally, NASA has used many Eilon Engineering systems—both large and small—on numerous projects where aerospace dynamometers were needed. Uses include weighing rockets and spacecraft during transport and more.

With such heavy, expensive equipment on the line, aerospace companies know they need to use a weighing system of the highest possible quality. It’s no surprise then that they turn to Eilon Engineering which has been manufacturing high-quality weighing systems for more than 45 years.
