Controlled Cable Tensioning

Controlled cable tensioning of overhead electricity and communication lines helps reach optimal cable tension while avoiding damage to cables due to changes in cable length caused by environmental influences

A wire pull test is also very important in suspension bridges, antennas and large tents that are supported by guy wires.

In these applications the use of Ron Crane Scales and dynamometers for controlled cable tension is important for stabilization of such structures.

Ron Dynamometers are especially suitable for cable pull test applications due to their innovative features:

  • Portability: Ron Dynamometers are convenient for working on site, thanks to their small dimensions and weight, and are available with small, weather resistant carrying cases. Great portability lets our systems accompany electric utility and telecom workers while easily and safely climbing service poles and towers, in order to conduct controlled cable tensioning.
  • Market leading battery life: 2000 hours of operation with common alkaline batteries. Works for months without needing a battery swap.
  • Remote display helps read the measurements comfortably and from a safe distance
  • High accuracy of 0.1% ensures safe and efficient tension load monitoring

How to check tension in a cable without permanently installing a load cell:

1.The following equipment is needed:

  • An auxiliary cable
  • A turnbuckle or cable puller attached to the auxiliary cable
  • Two cable grips
  • A Ron Load Cell attached to the auxiliary cable per the diagram above.

2.  Using cable grips at each end of the auxiliary cable, attach the tension meter , leaving slack, to the fixed cable to be tension tested.

3.  Using the turnbuckle or cable puller slowly increase the tension in the tension meter, manually checking the fixed cable for the first signs of slack.

4.  As soon as the first signs of slack appear in the guy wire, the entire load has been transferred to the tension meter , and the force will be displayed by the Ron Load Cell.

5.  If the load is less than desired, tighten the turnbuckle on the guy wire and retest until the desired load is obtained.

6.  If the load is greater than desired, loosen the turnbuckle on the guy wire and retest until the desired load is obtained.

7.  Remove the tension meter.
